Brand messaging: Inspire and connect with your target market

What actually is Brand Messaging?

Keeping it simple, it’s what you say and how you say it.

It’s about using the right words at the right time on your client’s journey from struggle to success.

Have you ever asked yourself the question?

How do I want my audience to feel about my brand?

I hope it is a thought-provoking question?

I ask because the focus is more likely on services you provide, pricing and getting your website copy out there.

Obviously, you will be committed to providing top-notch customer care, but what about emotions?

Let me give you an example – from my brand.

I want to evoke feelings of familiarity, connection, warmth and, most importantly, to create a brand experience that has inspiring confidence at heart.

Pause a moment and think about your brand.

What do you want your audience to understand about your brand?

Having decided how we want our audience to feel, what do you want your audience to understand about your brand?

This is the importance of brand messaging as you can control what you say and how you say it as you develop a brand personality to connect to your customers.

It’s about using the right words, phrases and paragraphs, and tone of voice to shape their thoughts and perceptions.

So, whom are you speaking to?

Your target customers: how well do you know them?

Ok, so I’m pretty sure you are familiar with the phrase in marketing, ‘Know Your Ideal Client’.

And again, perhaps you have been through the whole client avatar thing, considering their demographics and possibly geographical location. Still, it is the psychographics that I love – digging deep into the minds of your target customers to shape persuasive brand messages to inspire and connect.

Can you imagine trying to have a meaningful conversation with someone, and your aim is to motivate them to take action, but you don’t know much about them?

You could reel off facts, figures, features and benefits, but the important thing is to show your understanding and get a powerful emotional connection.

You know yourself, when someone really understands you, especially if you have a problem, you feel drawn to them – there’s that sense of familiarity that I hold so crucial in my brand

Your secret weapon: the voice of customer research.

If you really want to get into the hearts and minds of your target customer/ideal client, then ask questions and use the answers to come up with brand messaging that will persuade, inspire and connect.

When I do this on behalf of my clients, I interview, appropriate previous or present clients face to face, send out a survey, and do what is called review mining.

Review mining is where I go and look online for comments and feedback that have been submitted to other similar businesses.

If you don’t have much time or clients that are a good fit, it’s a great way to gather information.

I look in the following places:

  • Facebook groups
  • Instagram
  • Youtube
  • Client testimonials 

And also in forums such as Quora and Reddit.

Honestly, you will find nuggets of gold that will help you shape your messaging and speak directly to your targetted client.

Here’s a few of the things I’m looking for;

  • What pains or struggles need fixing.
  • What needs to be done to make that happen
  • Any fears clients may have.
  • How aware the possible client may be of their problem
  • How life improves after using a solution

Then I enjoy, yep, I really enjoy examining all responses, and the review mining to nail down the words and phrases most likely to motivate and inspire action from a target customer.

When you know whom you’re talking to and use the RIGHT words and phrases that evoke emotion, creating your personal brand experience in your copy is much easier and more convincing.

Brand messaging tip: consistency is key.

It is crucial to ensure that your brand message consistency cuts across every little bit of contact you are likely to have with your audience.

  • Website
  • Social media
  • Blog
  • Paid advertising
  • Print campaigns
  • Everywhere!

Brand messaging builds loyalty…

And that’s exactly what we’re aiming for.
